Everyone loves a good bargain and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of scoring some great items at a knockdown price. With this in mind, we scoured the items available at Rakuten – an online shopping mall that carries almost anything you are looking for here. Their product range includes electronics, clothing, hobbies, health and beauty, and many more – here are our top five tips to securing yourself a great deal at Rakuten:

1. Do your homework

It pays to spend time researching on Rakuten as different merchants may carry the same products but at a steep price difference. For example, TBM Online sells the Samsung Virus Doctor Car Ion Generator for only RM299. Another merchant, Best Denki, sells the exact same item on Rakuten at the regular retail price (RRP) of RM449. This is a huge 33% difference in price, and illustrates the types of bargains you can find on Rakuten simply by looking around the stores.

Additional Tip

Search using different product names, e.g. car air purifier and car ion generator, as different merchants may have different names for the same product.

2. Register as a member

On Rakuten, you have the option to check out as a guest or as a member. One of the best benefits of being a member is that you are rewarded with Rakuten Super Points (RSP) when you shop. Each RSP is equivalent to RM1 and can be used for the next purchase. As a member, you are also automatically subscribed to Rakuten’s newsletters and will be updated on the latest promotions so you do not miss out on any deals which they promote on a regular basis. More of that below…

3. Look out for Rakuten promotions

Rakuten runs special promotions quite frequently, and some of these promotions can be quite generous. For example, they ran a special Father’s Day promotion in May where they rewarded shoppers with a RM60 RACOUPON and 5x RSP. Taking this into account, if you bought the Samsung car ion generator during this period, you would only pay RM239 and get a 5% RSP rebate for your next purchase. That comes up to savings of almost 52% compared to Best Denki’s price for the same product!

4. Partner promotions

Rakuten also has partner promotions from time to time that you can keep an eye out for. For example, the current partnership with CIMB Bank allows you to get up to 20% in terms of RSP rebates if you pay with the CIMB Rebate Platinum MasterCard. Theoretically speaking, if you had paid for your Samsung car purifier with this CIMB card during the Father’s Day period, your savings goes up to a whopping 72% off the RRP! But what if you don’t have that card? Not to worry, you can apply online through Rakuten and get an additional RM200 worth of RSP to spend!

Additional Tip

These promotions usually come with additional terms and conditions. For example, the 20% RSP rebate fall under the category of “Limited Time Points” and has a validity of three months, as opposed to RSP which have a validity of 12 months.

5. Merchant promotions

There will be merchants who will run in-store promotions from time-to-time. The types of promotions vary and can range from simple discounts on selected, additional RSPs as generous as up to 20x extra, and also free shipping on deliveries. Keep an eye out for these as you can find a lot of value in these promotions and save a lot of money right away.

Additional Tip

On Rakuten’s homepage, look for these merchant promotions and offers under “Special Deals”, below “Categories”.
